Val Doss won her first disc golf world championship in 2007 in Highbridge.
This trip to Wisconsin was for something other than the sport. Val, who is listed in the record books as Valarie Jenkins, and husband, Nate Doss, were here to brew beer. The couple collaborated with Explorium Brewpub, 5300 S. 76th St., in Greendale.
The collaboration created SkyPA, a session IPA set to make its debut at the brewpub on April 6 just in time for the Skyline Classic disc golf competition April 8 and 9 at Fox River Park in Kenosha County. Val and Nate will compete.
Val and Nate are champion disc golfers — that's how they met. Val is a four-time World Disc Golf champion; Nate is a three-time World Disc Golf champion — but they're also beer enthusiasts, who hope to start Bevel Craft Brewing in their hometown of Bend, Ore.
"We have the same culture," Val said about the crossover between disc golf and brewing. "Craft brewers are very passionate about what they do. And we have devoted our lives to this sport that virtually people don't know about."
To help them fine-tune what they want in a brewery, Val and Nate are spending time between tournaments traveling the country and collaborating on beers. The concept was tested in previous beer collaborations in Vermont and Maine.
The visit to Explorium is the couple's second collaboration of the year, with more planned around disc golf tournaments. Nate comes up with the recipe, and local brewers adapt it with Val and Nate in the brewery. The couple specializes in IPAs and hoppy beers but recently helped with a saison and have a Kolsch planned next.
They worked with Explorium head brewer Kyle Ciske and assistant Keegan Wenzler to develop a session IPA packed with Eldorado, Amarillo and Citra hops. Ciske estimates the ABV (alcohol by volume) at 5%.
The beer will make its debut at a launch party starting at 3 p.m. April 6 at the Explorium Brewpub. Nate and Val Doss will be back for the event and will compete in the tournament.
Ultimately, they hope to always blend two of their favorite things.
"Our eventual goal is to have a course at the brewery," Val said.
